What's in a name? Domain Name Registration - the facts

Credit where it is due, without the behind the scenes administration team, very few businesses would survive. We are no different - except the administration requirements for websites are complex and critical, and not immediately obvious when you click on one of our websites.

Ensuring that everything is set-up properly is one of our principal tasks. For example, take your domain name. There are two important positions within the registration process, the Registrant and the Administrator.

The Registrant is the owner of the domain name. If we have registered a domain name on your behalf, we will always make sure that you are the registrant. Seems like the logical thing to do, but you would be amazed at the number of domain names that are registered in another person or organisation's name, without the knowledge of the domain name owner.

The Administrator is the role taken by the person or company that publishes content to your domain name. The combination of content hosted at a domain name is what makes a website - it's important to remember that these are two different things! Your content can be published to any domain name you administer - and your domain name can hold any content.

For all of our customers, we will appoint ourselves as Administrator so that we can publish your website to your domain name. Of course, in the unlikely event that you decide to leave our services, all you need to do is change the administrator. If you are the registrant, you can initiate any change in administrator via www.nominet.org.uk for a .co.uk domain name.

If you have any questions about domain names, administrators, registrants or the nominet service, call us and we will be happy to help.
