The importance of trading on-line- the £500M opportunity

Last Christmas, 18% of business in the UK was transacted on-line. The profits to be made from businesses that invest in this area are massive – and of course, the opportunity is there for anyone who is not working hard on this growing aspect of trading in 2011. For a classic example of how this is impacting on Morrison’s and Tesco’s, see this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/sep/19/online-sales-retailers-morrisons?INTCMP=SRCH

The Importance of the Business Model

When you are contemplating a website, we always advise our clients to think about their business model, and how the website fits into the overall marketing plan.  After all, if you invest in a quality website, you will want as many people as possible to find it, so why not promote it on all ofyour printed materials, and via social media too?  Finally, make sure you have a robust business model behind the website and you will surely have success.  Here’s a case in point – will Groupon ever make money?  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14484321

Images Make a Website

One of the most impactful ways you can boost your website is with great images. Some of our clients are keen photographers, and provide us with cracking images – see http://www.sauna-tech.co.uk for a fantastic example. If you are not sure about the images on your website, we have loads in our library that we can find for you, or we can recommend istockphoto.com and fotolia.com as great resources. One word of warning though – don’t copy images without the permission of the owner. You could be sued for breach of copyright if you do. As always, if in doubt then give us a shout – we’re always happy to help.

Nusphere PhpED v6.0: Powering Easy Web Sites

Filed under: website — Easy Web Sites @ 3:49 pm

Here at Easy Web Sites we use NuSphere PhpED to develop and maintain all our sites and have been impressed with its ease of use and logical layout since Day One. Our productivity has been greatly increased by managing our projects within the software, storing and editing files centrally.

When working on a large volume of smaller projects (as we tend to experience), an important feature for us is a clutter-free yet powerful development environment and PhpED’s docking windows system allows us to keep our important and most-used features to hand, while keeping the rest out of the way, without it being inaccessible. The UI is fully customisable with all buttons being removable, and toolbars can be moved and docked like the windows so if you prefer a minimalist layout it’s perfectly achievable.

Now, they’ve introduced version 6.0 which introduces a number of new features as well as speed improvements:

Javascript Code Completion

Version 6 introduced Javascript code completion which is a major help for us, especially if like us you use jQuery or one of the other popular libraries – it does of course index linked libraries. This is perfect for those moments when the function name is just out of reach in your memory, especially with the vast amount of functionality available when you’re running one of the big libraries.

Syntax Highlighting

One of the changes in 6.0 we’ve noticed is much more customisable syntax highlighting for HTML; for example form-related elements have their own colour scheme, and anchors have a different colour, which aids in the visualisation of the different components of the document.

Project Searching

The new search box allows you to search for files in the project with lightning speed; just type and hit enter. A big improvement for us.

Project unloading

Although only a minor feature, we like the project ‘unloading’ feature on version 6.0, which basically allows you to have a project in the workspace but unload it from memory, thus reducing its footprint. This now allows us to have all our sites in the workspace without crashing the machine, rather than opening projects individually when required.

With the Javascript code completion and HTML5/CSS3 support ensuring it’s well equipped into the future of the web, NuSphere is once again at the forefront of the web design IDE game and we’re proud to be powered by NuSphere PhpED!
